What Does LASIK Eye Surgery Do?
LASIK eye surgery uses a highly specialized laser to correct refractive errors such as myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness, and astigmatism. The treatment reshapes the cornea to improve your eye’s focusing power and enhance your visual acuity. LASIK eye surgery promises better vision and freedom
What Makes A Good Candidate for LASIK?
A comprehensive evaluation of your eyes and your medical history is needed to determine if you can undergo LASIK Bangkok eye surgery.
First off, you have to be at least 18 years old and must have stable glasses or contact lens prescription for at least one year. You also must have a cornea (the transparent front part of the eye) that is thick enough to allow the surgeon to safely create a corneal flap.
You must not suffer from vision-related and other diseases, especially autoimmune disorders, that may lessen the effectiveness of the surgery or hinder proper healing. You must also have no history of herpes infection in the eye as the procedure may trigger a recurrence of the infection.
You’re a less ideal candidate if you are nursing or pregnant on the date of surgery, as well as if you suffer from dry eye syndrome.
Take note that there are pre-existing conditions that may totally disqualify you from having LASIK eye surgery. These include advanced glaucoma, cataracts, corneal diseases and corneal thinning disorders.
Finally, it’s very important that you have realistic expectations about the results. You must also understand that as all surgical procedures, LASIK eye surgery involves some risk.
What Happens During Your LASIK Eye Surgery?
A traditional LASIK eye surgery begins with your eyes being anesthetized with topical eye drops. Then, a corneal flap on the outer layer of your eye will be created with the use of a specialized laser. This is done to expose the cornea.
An excimer laser is then applied in small, rapid bursts to reshape the cornea by removing the precise amount of corneal tissue needed to correct your refractive error. This takes only about 15 seconds per eye. After you cornea has been reshaped, the flap is replaced. No stitches are necessary and your eye will heal by itself.
The actual procedure normally takes no more than 30 minutes to complete for both eyes, but pre-surgical preparation may also take the same amount of time.
You may experience significantly improved vision right after the procedure. Final outcome of surgery and rate of healing vary from person to person but you can expect your vision to stabilize four to six months after your operation.
Taking Care Of Yourself After LASIK Laser Eye Surgery
You can expect a short recovery period after your treatment but you have to be relaxed during this time. You may be required to wear a protective shield over your eyes for a couple of days after the procedure. You may also be instructed by your surgeon to take antibiotic, anti-inflammatory or moistening eye drops. If you experience sensitivity to bright lights, you may be asked to wear glasses.
For the first 24 hours after your surgery, you should avoid reading, watching TV and operating a computer. If you need to, take baths instead of showers. Use a face cloth and be careful not to rub your eyes. You should also avoid makeup and smoky or dusty environments for about a week.
The Possible Risks & Complications Of LASIK Surgery
Complications associated with LASIK eye surgery are present but they very seldom occur. Some of these risks include: under/overcorrection, infection, flap wrinkles, central corneal islands, epithelial ingrowths, and corneal ecstasia.
