What Rhinoplasty Can Do
Rhinoplasty is often done to reshape your nose in order to bring about harmonious balance to the face. It can also be done to improve breathing if your nose has been damaged by trauma, disease of birth defect.
Your surgeon can thin, turn up, augment, shorten or elongate your nose to make it look better. Depending on your desired outcome, he can remove a hump off the bridge of your nose, narrow or widen your nostrils, or straighten your nose.
Rhinoplasty can be done as a single procedure or in combination with other surgeries like chin augmentation for more balanced facial features.
How to Prepare for the Procedure
Although rhinoplasty or a nose surgery in Bangok or Phuket is a very common surgical procedure, it does not always guarantee results that are according to your liking. It is therefore very important that during consultation, you are able to convey to your surgeon what it is exactly you want out of the procedure. Your surgeon, for his part, should be able to give you sound advice on how to manage your expectations.
Your fitness to undergo surgery will be evaluated during consultation. You need to be physically and mentally healthy. You will be asked to disclose your medical history as your surgeon has to be sure that you have no pre-existing conditions that may cause problems later on. Examples of these conditions include diabetes, heart and blood circulation problems.
You should stop smoking and drinking alcohol at least two weeks before surgery. Your surgeon will also ask you to regulate or avoid taking certain medication, vitamins, and other herbal supplements in the weeks leading up to your operation.
What Happens During Rhinoplasty
The procedure normally takes one to two hours to complete but you will most likely be required to stay for at least an extra night after your nose surgery in Phuket or Bangkok, at one of our partner hospitals. Depending on the extent of the procedure, your preference and your surgeon’s recommendation, local or general anesthetic may be used. In either case, you will be pain-free for the duration of your surgery.
There are a number of techniques that your surgeon may use to achieve the results that you want. Prior evaluation of the structure of your nose, the underlying nasal bones and cartilage, the overlying skin and other facial features will also determine what method is to be used and what results are realistic.
In a typical rhinoplasty, your surgeon makes an incision either inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or across the skin that separates your nostrils (open rhinoplasty). The skin of your nose will be separated from the supporting bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage framework is then exposed and sculpted to achieve your nose’s new shape. After that, the skin will be re-draped over the new framework.
Recovering From Rhinoplasty
The first few days following your operation, your nose will probably ache. Your face will feel swollen and puffy, and black eyes may set in. You may also experience periodic headaches. Any pain and discomfort can usually be controlled by medicine that your surgeon will prescribe.
You will also probably feel a bit stuffy for a few days. It is normal to have some bloody nasal discharge. You should try not to blow your nose for about a week as this can disturb the wounds.
Within a week or two after your rhinoplasty, most of your bruises will be gone and swelling should have subsided. You can expect to go back to your normal routine although strenuous activities, heavy lifting, straining and rough contact with your face should be avoided for another couple of weeks.
Aside from certain risks such as infection and bleeding that are inherent to all surgical procedures, there are some complications specific to rhinoplasty.
After surgery, small blood vessels may burst and may appear as tiny red spots on the skin’s surface. These are generally minor but may be permanent.
When open rhinoplasty is performed or when the procedure calls for the narrowing of flared nostrils, minor scarring on the underside of the nose may occur.
In rare cases, a second procedure or revision surgery may be required to correct a slight deformity that was not addressed during the primary operation.
All in all, rhinoplasty is a relatively safe procedure and results are usually dramatic and long-lasting.
