What Does The Full Facelift Entail?
Aside from aging, there are other things that cause the skin to lose elasticity or sag and bring about unwanted lines, wrinkles and extra folds. Smoking, weight loss and prolonged exposure to the sun are examples of such factors.
A full facelift rejuvenates all three major “aesthetic units” of the face, namely: the forehead, the mid-face and the neck. It involves the removal of excess fat and the tightening of facial muscles and skin. This is done to give you a well-rested, fresh appearance from forehead to neck while maintaining your natural facial mimics.

Who Benefits From Full Facelift Surgery?
If you are of good physical and mental health, you are an ideal candidate for full facelift. It is also useful to be within your ideal weight range as subsequent weight loss can cause further wrinkling.
If you have some types or stages of diabetes or if you have problems with your heart, lungs and blood pressure, be sure to let the surgeon know. You could be unfit for surgery if any of these conditions remains uncontrolled.

If you are a smoker, it is important to give up the habit at least two weeks before and after the operation. Nicotine can have a serious effect on the healing process. And so do alcohol and certain medicine, vitamins and herbal supplements. Your surgeon will discuss other tips and steps on how to best prepare yourself for surgery.
Of course, having in-depth knowledge about the procedure through independent research will help you a great deal when discussing with your surgeon.
The Procedure
There are varied techniques to achieve a full facelift. The exact method to be used depends on your facial structure and upon your surgeon’s recommendation.
Before ↓After ↓
Usually, your will be placed under a general anesthetic so you will be asleep for the duration of the surgery and will be free of pain.
The incision usually starts from the temples above the hairline and continues in front of the ear and carries on behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. For the neck lift, you may have a small incision under the chin.
Your surgeon then separates the skin from the fat and muscle below before tightening the underlying muscles and pulling the skin back and removing the excess skin. The incisions are then sewn up and bandaged. Plastic tubes may be left in the incisions to drain excess fluid.
Full facelift surgery is an inpatient procedure, and a delicate, but intensive surgery, so you’ll need to spend about 4 nights in the hospital after your operation.
What Happens After Your Full Facelift?
It is normal to experience bruising, swelling and numbness in the affected areas, but this will eventually subside over the course of several weeks. You will take prescriptive medicine to alleviate whatever discomfort you may feel. Sutures and bandages will be removed after a few days.
At the hospital, your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and face color will be regularly monitored by your nurses. You will also likely be asked stay at a semi-upright position as this helps reduce swelling and enables better observation by the nurses. You may also be asked to avoid coughing, stooping and straining as these can cause blood to rush to your face and minor bleeding.

At home, you should avoid bending and heavy lifting for about two weeks. Keeping a semi-upright posture for most of the day will further help reduce swelling. On the third or fourth day following your operation, you can start washing and gently blow-drying your hair. Cosmetic make-up may be used but you should avoid applying it along the suture line until your scars have healed fully. Smoking and alcohol intake are a big no-no during the recovery period.
You can expect to be back at work after about two weeks but should avoid strenuous activities for at least one month. Proper rest, a sensible diet and strictly following your surgeon’s orders will help speed up the healing process.
The Possible Complications Of A Full Facelift
Full facelift surgery is a very common procedure and complications, though very rare, can happen. These include prominent, red scars; bleeding under the skin; infection; hair loss surrounding the scars; nerve damage; broken capillaries; numbness around the incision areas; skin discoloration; asymmetrical features; and blood clotting.
Proper preparation before surgery as well as correct conduct after the operation will greatly decrease the possibility of these complications setting in.
