Are You A Good Candidate For A Tummy Tuck in Thailand?
If you’ve had trouble getting rid of stubborn fat and excess skin on your abdomen despite proper diet and regular exercise, then a tummy tuck may be for you. What that means in more common terms is that if you’ve lost a lot of weight or have undergone a demanding pregnancy, then you might have severe stretch marks, sagging or droopy skin, skin flaps that hang down and/or weakened abdominal muscles. Those are the most common concerns that our clients express when they opt for a tummy tuck here in Thailand.
Of course, to be a good candidate, you need to be in generally good health and within the range of your ideal weight. We mention this last part because it’s important to note that a Tummy Tuck is not a weight loss surgery, even though it will help get rid of some excess fat and skin that constitutes weight. When it comes to your health, if you suffer from medical conditions such as some forms and stages of diabetes, some blood circulation problems or any heart and lung disease, you might be put at an increased health risk if you undergo surgery, so you should contact us and we’ll work with you and a surgeon to figure out a personal answer for your situation.
Finally, you need to have realistic expectations about the procedure. Though the results of a tummy tuck are usually favorable and dramatic, and even though it’s one of our most popular procedures, you also need to keep in mind that that there are potential risks and complications in any surgical procedure. You also need to understand what it will and won’t do for you, what scarring to expect and more. That’s something we’ll help you with as we work with you, though, so don’t worry if you don’t have all the information yet – that’s what we do!
What Are Some Benefits of A Tummy Tuck?
The most obvious benefit of an abdominoplasty in Thailand is the improved appearance you’ll experience immediately. The excess skin will be gone immediately and abdominal muscles will be tighter, giving your stomach a flatter and firmer look as your recovery proceeds. In most cases you should also have a smaller waistline after your procedure as well. Of course you’ll have a scar that usually runs laterally across your lower waistline and that can be obscured under clothing in most cases. This scar will fade over time, but will never become compeltely invisible to the naked eye.
Beyond the immediate physical effects, though, we hear all kinds of positive results from our clients. Most people report that they can now wear “normal” clothing again and don’t have to use special clothes to hide skin flaps and excessively droopy skin. We also hear from many clients that they feel much more comfortable being intimate after their surgery. The stories about changed lives tend to keep coming in large part because a Tummy Tuck in Phuket, Thailand – or anywhere – is one of the most straightforward procedures with among the most dramatic results for our clients who really need one.
How Can You Prepare for Surgery?
To help ensure the best possible outcome for your Thailand Tummy Tuck surgery and to best decrease the chance of experiencing complications, it’s a good idea to follow the surgeon’s advice and to keep in mind a few things that will be recommended for you to do. Some examples include:
- Maintaining a balanced diet in the weeks leading up to your tummy tuck.
- Keeping your body in shape through regular exercise.
- If you are a smoker, you need to completely stop for at least two weeks before the surgery.
- Letting the surgeon know if you’re taking medications or herbal supplements.
Providing your body with the right nutrients will help strengthen your immune system and help you recuperate faster. However, you should discuss with your surgeon any dietary supplements you take as some are known to interfere with blood flow and you may be asked to stop intake for the period leading up to the surgery and during your recovery.
Exercise, meanwhile, increases your metabolic rate and builds muscle mass which help you to avoid gaining weight during the post-surgery recovery period. On the other hand, you’ll need to avoid tobacco use – meaning no nicotine patches or gums either. Tobacco use increases the risk of complications by constricting your skin’s blood vessels and can considerably slow down the healing process.
There’s more to know and we’ll work with you to get you more complete information for your specific situation during the process that we go through. Still, educating yourself about the procedure is also something we recommend so that you have good information and can ask good questions. The more informed you are as a patient, the more likely you are to have a good set of expectations and therefore the more likely you’ll be to be happy with your results!
What Happens During a Thailand Tummy Tuck?
There are a number of tummy tuck techniques and which technique is used will depend on the extent of the area to be treated, the results you want to achieve and the surgeon’s preference with respect to your needs.

The basic tummy tuck procedure involves a long incision across your lower abdomen which runs from hipbone to hipbone. Another incision is made around your belly button. The skin is then separated from the abdominal wall up to the ribs and exposing your abdominal muscles. At this point, the muscles are shortened or pulled together and stitched intto their newer, tighter position. Afterward, excess skin and fat are removed and you’re stitched up and dressed.
A fairly typical tummy tuck takes about two to three hours to complete, though every situation is unique, so depending on how extensive your surgery is yours may take quite a bit longer. Regardless of the extent of your surgical needs, you’ll be under general anesthetic and unable to feel any pain during the procedure. Then, once you wake up, you’ll usually need to stay at least one night in the hospital (possibly more) so that the nurses and surgeons can keep an eye on you and make sure you’re starting off your recovery on the right track and aren’t experiencing any complications from your procedure.
Recovering From Your Tummy Tuck
For the first few days after your surgery, your abdomen will be a little swollen and tender. You might also experience a little pain and numbness. This is all fairly routine, usually quite minor and short-term, and can be managed with medication prescribed by your surgeon and covered under the cost of your procedure.
It’s also possible that, immediately after the surgery, you may have a a little difficulty standing up straight as your body adjusts to the changes. Still, you should try to move about gently as soon as the nurses and doctors say it’s okay as getting up and moving around can help you reduce the risk of blood clots.

Scarring is something that everyone is concerned about and as a Tummy Tuck is a fairly extensive procedure, there definitely is some scarring. In most cases, these scars might even appear to worsen for the first few months. Over time, though, they’ll begin to flatten and lighten in color and after 9 to 12 months they should fade to something more like their permanent appearance. Don’t worry too much, though, as the scars will be below your navel and can be hidden by most clothing.
As you can see, full recovery takes a bit of time, though the recovery does start immediately and in most cases goes quite well. Normally, you can expect to return to your typical routine after two to four weeks, though you should avoid heavy lifting and other strenuous activities for a few more weeks afterward in order to make sure you give you newly-tightened stomach muscles plenty of time to heal.
